Competition Overview

Teams of at least two students are invited to submit proposals for a start-up venture. Proposals may be for digital or physical products, services, for-profit or social in nature. The proposal may be for a completely new business or to take an existing project to a “next level.” Finalists will be selected based on a written proposal. Fellowship recipients will be chosen following a public pitch to a panel of alumni entrepreneurs. Winning teams will receive a fellowship to support the development of their project in the summer of 2020.

Support for your team

During fall term we will host information sessions. These sessions we will go over the competition process, help students develop their ideas, and facilitate team formation. Jake Phillips ’07, co-founder of Prep Hoops serves as Carleton’s Entrepreneur in Residence and will be available to meet with you to discuss your ideas. Teams who notify Nathan Grawe of their intent to submit a proposal will also be paired with an alumni entrepreneur who will serve as the team’s mentor and sounding board.

Deadlines and decisions

Written proposals are due to Nathan Grawe no later than 5:00 PM on Monday, January 27, 2020. Teams will be notified of their finalist status by  February 1, 2020. Finalist teams will present a pitch (approximately 10 minutes long including time for Q&A/discussion with a panel of judges) during a public event on Saturday, February 22, 2020, 1:00-3:00.

Outcomes

The winning team will complete their fellowship work during Summer 2020. In the following academic year they will report the progress of their work in an on-campus presentation to students interested in the 2021 competition. The on-campus presentation represents the “final product” expected from the team.
