Twin Cities Careers in Sustainability Scholars – 2018

The Careers in Sustainability Scholars Program will expose interested Carleton students from all class years and majors to careers in sustainability in both the corporate and non-profit sectors. Students selected to participate in the Scholars program will attend a networking workshop, an on-campus symposium, site visits in the Twin Cities, and an alumni networking event. The program also provides a required career readiness component through which participants will hone their resumes, develop professionalism and networking skills, and plan for career next steps.

Scholars program dates

  • Information session: Tuesday, January 16, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. (RSVP via the Tunnel)
  • MANDATORY | Application deadline: Thursday, February 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. (apply via the Tunnel)
  • Selections made and applicants notified: Monday, February 5
  • Accepted students must confirm participation: Tuesday, February 6
  • MANDATORY | Orientation: Thursday, February 8, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
  • MANDATORY | Networking workshop with Lee Caraher '86: Thursday, February 15, 6:15 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.
  • Professional headshot and career materials workshop: Wednesday, February 21, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
  • MANDATORY | On-campus symposium: Friday, March 16, all day
  • MANDATORY | Visits: Sunday, March 18 – Wednesday, March 21, all day
  • MANDATORY | Alumni networking event

Attendance at the orientation and networking workshop, the on-campus symposium, all site visits, and the alumni networking event is mandatory. If you have a conflict with any of these dates, you must meet with Sarah Wolfe and receive approval to apply to the program.

Career readiness component requirements

The Scholars program also entails a career readiness component. These requirements not only contribute to your learning and career development, but also help to ensure the long-term success of the Scholars program at Carleton.

Prior to on-campus symposium:

  •  Pre-trip survey
  •  Resume draft
  •  Elevator speech draft
  •  Tailored networking e-mail draft
  •  Student profile draft
  •  LinkedIn profile draft

During on-campus symposium:

  • Final resume
  • Final elevator speech and practice
  • Networking practice
  • Company research and presentation


  • Post-trip survey
  • Two-page reflection paper
  • Action plan for career next steps using Career Tracks
  • Practice interview with a career counselor

  • Cargill | Corporate
  • Jeff Paulson Law & Spye Group | Legal
  • The Wedge Community Co-op | Food
  • Fresh Energy | Non-profit
  • Fair State Brewing Cooperative | Alumni Networking Event

Successful applicants will:

  • Possess a genuine interest in careers in sustainability.
  • Be able to articulate what they want to learn from taking part in the program.
  • Be committed to completing program career readiness component requirements in a timely, thorough, and thoughtful manner.
  • Be willing and eager to engage with the alumni, employees at visit sites, and others during visits and networking events.
  • Represent the College well by exhibiting exemplary conduct on and off campus.
  • Be on time, reliable, and responsible.
  • Be in good academic standing.

Additional program logistics

  • Students will be housed on campus during the program.
  • Transportation will be provided for the site visits via bus.
  • Carleton will cover travel, lodging, and some meal expenses.
