Don't be alarmed if you see smoke in the Arb this fall!
Arboretum staff will be conducting several prescribed burns in both the Upper and Lower Arboretum. Fire is an important part of the prairie and savanna ecosystem and helps reduce invasive species problems and eliminates unwanted brush. Some of the fires will be in support of a new research project being implemented by Carleton assistant professor of biology Dan Hernandez. The Arboretum staff are in contact with the Northfield Fire Department prior to burning and will select the best days to minimize risk and reduce smoke concerns.
