Celebrate the Season at the Northfield Winter Stomp!

February 13, 2012

Carleton, along with the Northfield Community Contra Dance Association, will present the annual Northfield Winter Stomp! on Friday, February 17 at the Northfield Armory.

Featuring the music of Contratopia and led by caller Robin Nelson, the evening begins with a half-hour lesson at 7 p.m. followed by three hours of folk dancing from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Students and members of the community are invited to participate. No dance partner is needed, however event organizers recommend bringing comfortable shoes and festive, swing-ready attire.

Contra dance is a form of English folk dance that involves dance callers and the music of fiddles, banjos, pianos and guitars. Contra has been popular in Northfield and on the Carleton campus since the late 1970s

The music of Contratopia has long been a favorite at Northfield contra dances. The band also frequently plays for dances in the Twin Cities and across the country.

The Northfield Armory is located at 519 Division Street in downtown Northfield. The event is open to the public. Thanks to support from the Carleton Student Association (CSA), admission is free with a Carleton student ID. For others, admission is $9 for adults, and $6 for children and non-Carleton students, with a family cap of $25.

The Northfield Conta Dance Association is an informal social organization of friends and dance enthusiasts who are dedicated to fostering an ongoing tradition of inter-generational community contra dances in downtown Northfield.
