  • AmeriCorps VISTA Program

    AmeriCorps VISTA Program has open positions (listed below) which may be of particular interest to graduating Carleton seniors in the African and African American Studies program. These projects focus on a number of African American communities in the Twin Cities and the persistent economic and racial disparities they face. We have some Carleton alumni currently serving with us and would love to see more Carls involved in our program. Could you pass these opportunities along to anyone who might be interested?

    MCN VISTA members are placed in nonprofits serving immigrant and refugee communities and communities of color throughout the Twin Cities area to create and improve programs that bring people out of poverty. Members serve full-time for one year and receive many benefits, including a living stipend, valuable career experience, healthcare allowance, over 120 hours of professional development support and training, and an end-of-service education award (worth $5,775) or cash stipend ($1,500).

    The deadline to apply is May 13 and applications are reviewed as received. To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years old and a U.S. citizen/national or lawful permanent resident. Students can view our full list of available positions on our website at


    • Ujamaa Place – Program Development Associate

    Ujamaa Place provides programming within a community environment that assists African American men with stable housing, re-engagement with families, work and life skills essential to self-sufficiency, with a focus on work-entry programming, specific skills training, employment retention, and financial management training. The VISTA project will strengthen fundraising, marketing, and program development efforts. Apply here.

    • Ka Joog – Program Specialist

    The Program Specialist will advance Ka Joog’s mission to address critical challenges facing Minnesota Somali youth through a variety of activities including: student-parent engagement; fundraising and development; and evaluation. The VISTA member will learn a variety of valuable skills necessary for running a nonprofit while providing critical support that will result in a long-term positive impact on the organization.     • Isuroon – Nonprofit Sustainability Specialist

    Isuroon aims to empower the women of the Somali community and increase women’s participation in making the decisions that affect their health and well-being. The Nonprofit Sustainability Specialist will increase support available to the Somali community, specifically Somali women, through Isuroon by increasing operational efficiencies; expanding the organization’s connections with individual donors and volunteers;  and increasing capacity through communications and fund development.     • African Economic Development Solutions – Fund Development and Volunteer Recruitment Specialist

    The VISTA will develop strategies to make our organization more effective in the work we do. Under the supervision of the Executive Director, our VISTA will work on developing and executing fund development strategies. By cultivating substantial relationships with foundations and donors, and by maximizing our manpower through leveraging volunteers and our networks within the arts and small business communities, the VISTA will have the unique opportunity to take our organization’s impact to the next level.   • Challenge Detroit is now accepting applications for their fifth class of Fellows!

    Challenge Detroit’s vision is to attract individuals from across the country as well as retain talent from the city and region through a one-year fellowship program. Over the course of a year, fellows live, work, play, give and lead in Detroit. They work for top top regional companies, while partnering monthly with nonprofits to address issues and opportunities facing the community.

  • Black Resistance in the Americas: Slavery and its Aftermath

    On October 14-15, 2016, the Department of Black Studies, University of Missouri, Columbia campus, will host its annual Black Studies Fall Conference to explore the theme of Black Resistance in the Americas: Slavery and its Aftermath. Following up on the student protests against racism in 2015 at the University of Missouri that generated international media attention, the conference is focused on developing discussions over the origins and nature of black resistance and its impact on the lives of people of color and society as a whole. The conference will be an international gathering of scholars, activists, and students who will explore the factors of both historical and contemporary black resistance in the Americas, and reflect on the approaches for addressing the concerns of contemporary social justice movements against racial inequality. 

    Discussion Topics
    Any of the following topics may be presented within the framework of resistance for discussion at the conference:  •    Slave Resistance and Culture/Identity Formation
    •    Race, Nationalism, Politics, and Activism
    •    Gender, Feminism, and Masculinity
    •    Religion and Decolonization
    •    Economics, Business, and Entrepreneurship
    •    Language, Literature, Performing Arts, and Sportsmanship

    These topics are some of the mechanisms that people of African descent have used to resist bondage, domination, disempowerment, inequality, and injustices resulting from their encounters with the West, from colonization to forced migration to the Americas. In this light, the conference is aimed at delineating the specific concerns of black communities. Presenters will explore strategies that can contribute to the development of more effective approaches to alleviate the socioeconomic and political problems that have continued to stunt the development of black communities and provoke black resistance.

    Publication of selected papers in a Black Studies anthology will be considered following the conference, and presenters should be prepared to submit a completed paper upon request. 

    Submission Guidelines
    In keeping with the tradition of Black Studies, abstracts are welcome from various disciplines, however, they should be related to the overall conference theme, and must be guided by the interdisciplinary perspective. Both papers and panels are invited for consideration. Students are also specially invited to propose individual papers, panels, and poster presentations. Please submit an abstract in PDF, Doc, or TXT format of no more than 125 words for individual papers and 250 words for panels by Thursday, March 31, 2016, to be considered for the conference. Abstracts should be submitted to Selected participants will be notified by email on Saturday, April 30, 2016.

    The titles for individual papers and for panels should be no longer than 70 characters, and we reserve the right to edit. Panels must be at least four persons and no more than five persons, with a named panel chair. If special equipment is required, please indicate this on the submission for papers or panels.

    Film presentations are welcome and sessions will be arranged for these presentations. Special sessions will also be arranged for students to facilitate networking and entrance to graduate school. Please submit any questions and concerns to the conference chair at 

  • Urban Scholars

    The City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Public Schools, the Metropolitan Council, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, the State of Minnesota, are currently seeking future leaders for employment in a summer leadership development program for college students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.

    • Full-time, competitively paid, professional resume-building work experience for undergraduates and graduate students.
    • Direct access to agency leaders including but not limited to the Mayor, City Council members, Department Heads, Superintendents, and Executive Directors.
    • A team-based community project that will be presented to City Council, community stakeholders, senior management and colleagues.
    •  Leadership and communications skills development as part of the Urban Scholars Leadership Institute
    • Networking Advisors to provide guidance to achieve professional goals.
    • Opportunities to create valuable professional networks.

    This highly competitive summer internship starts on Monday, May 23, 2016 and ends on Friday, August 12, 2016. Applications will be accepted until Friday, February 19, 2016. This opportunity is open to undergraduate and graduate college students regardless of academic major. Public sector experience is highly desired, but not required.



    • Must be enrolled and in good standing at an accredited two or four year college, university, graduate program, or law school or must be a recent graduate with a degree conferred between December 2015 and May 2016.
    • Must have completed first year of post-secondary education.
    • Must be authorized to work in the United States
    • Must be able to participate on a full-time basis for 12 weeks (40 hours per week)

    Please note that recent graduates (December 2015 & May of 2016) are eligible for participation and there is no residency requirement.

  • 2016 Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial Scholarship is open for the residents of New York City and of African-American, Latino, or Native American background who are enrolled as current high school graduate or recipient of a High School Equivalency Diploma.

    --Two sections offered:

    Section A: Wednesdays @ 3:10-4:30 for 4 weeks: Jan. 6, Jan. 13, Jan. 20, Jan. 27


    Section B: Thursdays @ 3:10-4:30 for 4 weeks: Jan. 7, Jan. 14, Jan. 21, and Jan. 28

    Seniors, apply to be a part of the 4-week career seminar that will help you figure out what you want to do after graduation and know how to get it. We'll cover topics such as how to:

    • understand your strengths and interests
    • search for jobs
    • network
    • write cover letters and resumes
    • interview

  • The program will be June 26-July 1, 2016 at Pennsylvania State University and travel, housing, food, and course materials are covered.  Students will receive advising about graduate admissions and research methods.  They will also participate in a simulated doctoral seminar with Ford fellow Courtney Morris.  

    Students should be juniors or seniors during the 2016-2017 academic year, but might also be a promising student who has finished his/her undergrad career and is now considering graduate school.  The new deadline for applications is February 15, 2016.

    The American University in Cairo

    The Program:Established in 1981, the Presidential Internship Program at The American University in Cairo (AUC) provides recent university graduates the opportunity to spend an academic year working at the highest levels of an international university, learn Arabic, and experience life in Egypt.

    Work and Available Offices:Participants intern full-time in one of eight university offices, working in a range of fields including University administration, sustainability, finance, student development, advancement, communications, and more.   • The 2015 Durades Dialog will be held at the Minneapolis Institute of Art on Friday, October 23, 2015 at 6:30 P.M.

    The 2015 dialog will feature painter, sculptor and installation artist Renee Stout. Ms. Stout is primarily known for her explorations of tendencies from her African past that manifests itself in her contemporary art. She will review career highlights and exciting recent work. Her talk will be followed by a dialog with Hawona Sullivan Janzen, curator at the UROC Gallery.

  • The Center for Human Rights and Social Justice at Illinois Wesleyan University is pleases to announce that it will be sponsoring its 4th annual Human Rights Undergraduate Research Workshop on February 26-27th 2016.  this year's theme is Inequality and Inequity, with an emphasis on the economic, social and political aspects of those issues.  This two-day event will gather undergraduate students from liberal arts institiutions to present their independent research related to this theme.  In the spirit of the workshop setting, presentations will be informal and there will be ample room for dialogue among all participants.  Faculty mentors are also encouraged to attend.

    In order to be considered for participation in the workshop, interested students should submit a 500 word abstract summarizing their research project and obtain a letter of support from a faculty member at their home institution.   Please submit abstracts and letters to  Irv Epstein,, by December 1, 2015.
