Guest Artist Lecture: Maria Isa - "Bomba to Hip-Hop..."

Maria IsaMaria Isa will present a lecture titled 'Bomba to Hip-Hop Tools of Resistance, Communication and Unity' for Carleton students and Northfield community members via Zoom. She will also work with the Carleton Global Music Ensemble students. Together they will make a music video that will be played via Zoom during the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble and Global Music Ensemble Concert at the end of Spring term.


Maria Isa is an award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, rapper, activist, youth worker, mother, wife and international recording artist born in Minnesota and raised on St. Paul's West Side barrio. Maria was raised by the influences of many different rhythms of Afro-LatinX-and Indigenous history and channeled it into performing arts and activism at a very early age. She has studied with master musicians of Afro-Boricua music of Bomba and Plena of Puerto Rico, trained in concert choral and jazz influencing her to create an Afro-LatinX and Hip-hop lyricism performance style. Maria Isa is the recipient of the 2019-2020 McKnight Fellowship for Musicians and since 2009, serves as CEO for the independent label Sota Rico distributing over 13 of her projects bridging her music mix and upbringing of Minnesota and Puerto Rican culture into a fusion of sound. Isa has received the National Hispana Leadership lnstitute's 'Rising Latina Star' award for her outstanding work on behalf of working and educating incarcerated youth throughout the state of Minnesota, while hosting several Nobel Peace Prize laureates. Maria Isa's music has been heard on several network shows on NBC, ABC, NETFLIX, MTV, STARZ, Telemundo, and VH1. She is known as one of the top artists in the Twin Cities, featured on every major publication in the state of Minnesota, and has performed nationally and internationally with her original music. Learn more about Maria Isa's work and music at http://www.iammariaisa.com.
