Native Mussel Research Internship Summer 2019

Conduct research through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Center for Aquatic Mollusk Programs! This research internship will be based in Lake City, MN, but will travel statewide to survey freshwater mussels.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Diving in large rivers such as the Mississippi and St. Croix
  • Ability to perform work using a microscope
  • Sample mussels in streams, rivers, and lakes while snorkeling or diving
  • Excavating and sorting quadrat samples
  • Endangered mussel propagation and reintroduction
  • Assist with mussel host identification in the laboratory
  • Collect native fishes

Applicants should be comfortable in the water, and prepared to work long hours in a variety of field and weather conditions. Workers are responsible for their own housing and living conditions. The wage is $15.00/hour (40hours/week).
