International Film Forum: THE BORDER AS A CENTER

Tue, January 10, 2017 • 7:00pm - 8:45pm (1h 45m) • Weitz Cinema WCC161

The Border as a Center [La frontera como centro] (Abu Ali/Toni Serra, 2016, Spain/France, 63 min.) – Palmar Alvarez Blanco, Q&A with director Abu Ali/Toni Serra

The Border as a Center will take us on a journey highlighting the significance of the visual but also of borders in current contexts. He will ask questions about what it means to cross borders. Is it possible to cross them completely, leaving everything behind? Or is there always something we take with us, like a kind of elastic, flexible border that we’re not even aware of? Toni Serra will talk about the power of the image, specifically images depicting migration. He will show us many types of images, from military-type maps and surveillance camera footage of people being deported to Morocco, to info-graphics and computer games such as Border Control. All are part of the veil: shown to us in order to make us see the designated “Other” as a threat? These realities produced by the mainstream media interfere with our direct experience, creating hegemonic discourses that are difficult to tear down. How can we begin? How do we “hack” the veil?
