Magical Thinking: What We See and What We Think We See
Thu, October 10, 2019
• 4:00pm
- 5:00pm (1h) • Gould Library Athenaeum
We all have intuitive beliefs about the workings of our minds, and those beliefs are firmly grounded in our daily experiences. We believe we see the world as it is and that we know why we see it the way we do. Yet our experiences can be misleading, fostering illusions about our cognitive abilities and delusions about the richness of our understanding. I will present research on visual perception, attention, and meta-cognition and will draw upon insights from magicians to illustrate how the unnoticed limits of our own minds lead to magical thinking.
