Giant Sparks and a Series of Expensive Detectors: Spark-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, a Brief History

Amy Bauer, Ph.D. Official/Unofficial Story
Principal Applications Support Engineer
TSI Incorporated

This talk will describe the development and testing of a new analytical instrument for measuring the elemental composition of materials. It will address the initial considerations in the design of the instrument and a couple of major applications, including bioaerosol detection and identification. It will compare and contrast the new technology with two more familiar ones, spark-source OES and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy.
