Foods of the Middle Roman Republic - Lunches in LDC

Mon, February 1, 2021 • 11:00am - 3:00pm (4h) • East Dining Hall

We are recreating ancient recipes based on archaeological evidence and translations from Latin poety, cookbooks, farming manuals, letters, biographies, histories and more. Unlike modern Italian cuisine, Ancient Romans did not have tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, coffee, chocolate, peppers, pasta, rice, sugar, or corn!

Monday: Recipes from Cato the Elder's book on farming from 165 B.C.

Tuesday: We see here the influence of North African food on Roman cuisine.

Wednesday: A celebration of foods Romans considered traditional that show influences from all over the Mediterranean.

Thursday: About cabbage, Cato the Elder exclaims, 'Nother is more healthy!'

Friday: Recipes from Apicius, a 1st C.B.C. gourmand and recipe collector.

Come to the LDC and taste the foods of the ancient Romans!
