Data science: who, what, where, when and why?
“Data Science” is a new field of research and its application is having an amazing impact on the world. However, it isn’t always clear who are data scientists, what they do, when it came about and why we feel it is necessary. In this talk I will walk through research programs in computer vision, spatial navigation and healthcare, that required data science—some of these projects were completed even before the category of data science existed. I will discuss how data science is a valuable bridge between basic research and application.
