CS Tea Talk: Differential Privacy: A Rigorous Approach to Data Privacy

Thu, October 17, 2019 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm (1h) • CMC 301

Tea Talk speaker will be Steven Wu, Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota.  Computing technologies have made it much easier to gather personal data, including everything from GPS locations to medical records, from online behavior to social exchanges. Wide collection and extensive usage of such detailed personal information calls for a strong, meaningful, and mathematically rigorous notion of privacy. In this talk, Professor Wu will give an introduction to such a notion---differential privacy, together with several basic techniques to develop tools for privacy-preserving data analysis. Towards the end, he will also highlight an interesting connection between differential privacy and the notion of generalization in machine learning
