CS Tea: Assistant Professor Getiria Onsongo

Thu, November 12, 2020 • 4:00pm - 4:45pm (45m) • Via Zoom

Assistant Professor Getiria Onsongo (Macalester College) works on bioinformatics, and in his talk, he'll be exploring the computational challenges of genetic testing for diagnosing diseases and recognizing disease variations, especially when we need to perform these tests quickly and cost effectively. This talk will explore the use of computational techniques and emerging technologies to aid genetic testing in the clinic. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss the use of machine learning techniques to improve detection accuracy of a genetic testing tool that identifies disease causing deletions in the human genome. The second part of the talk will cover the use of cloud resources to increase turnaround time and reduce the cost of the tool.  If you're interesting in ideas like personalized medicine or interdisciplinary applications of computer science and biology, this is sure to be an interesting talk!
