Gender Equity in CS: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

By Dr. Jan Pearce, Visiting Professor of Computer Science, St. Olaf

This talk focuses on the work of an international working group on gender equity in computing. The talk will Include a review of existing literature resources on gender intervention programs and the the good, the bad, and the sometimes surprisingly ugly results of an international survey on faculty perceptions towards gender equity efforts in computing.

Currently visiting St. Olaf, Dr. Pearce is on sabbatical from Berea College (KY) where she founded the Computer and Information Science Major and where she is currently serving as the building shepherd of a $40+ million new Technology building project. A champion for inclusive excellence, she was a member of the international working group which produced the work she will be presenting; she is a member of the organizing committee for TRIWIC, a regional tri-state women in computing conference,;and she is currently working the the national ACM-W leadership to update the curriculum for women in computing conferences. She has publications in environmental modeling, swarm robotics, CS education, and diversity.
