You Can't Manage What You Can't Measure: The Role of Data Collection and Analysis in Reducing Carleton's Carbon Footprint

The rise of 'big data' has paved the way for innovative solutions to many complex issues associated with energy conservation and carbon emissions reduction efforts.  Good data visualization and engagement tools encourage and reinforce positive behavior change.  More refined metering systems reveal the true cost and energy savings from energy conservation projects and enable more sophisticated project funding mechanisms.  Reliable benchmark data allow energy consumers and carbon emitters to measure improvement (or decline) against themselves or compare with others.  Automated fault detection systems hasten resolution of maintenance issues that - if left unattended - waste energy. This discussion will provide a high level overview of how advanced methods of engaging, understanding and analyzing energy and emissions data encourage innovative opportunities to alter the status quo.
