Computational Models of Spoken-Word Recognition

Over the last two years, Julia Strand (Carleton psychology) and I have been collaborating on some research exploring questions about spoken-word recognition.  Specifically, when you are presented with a single word spoken in a noisy environment (think Sayles during Wednesday 3A), some words are more easily recognized by a listener than others.  Can we predict which words are easier to process?  Some of the ideas that we've explored involve network analysis, Hidden Markov Models, edit distance, the subset sum problem, integer linear programming, and the most scathing paper review that I've ever received in my life.  I'll describe some yet-to-be-determined smattering of our (potential) work, capriciously selected from work that's already published, work that's in progress, and work that's not even yet begun.
