CS Tea Talk: Computer Science Goes to Sea

Thu, May 16, 2019 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm (1h) • CMC 301

Join featured speaker Rika Anderson, Associate Professor of Biology, for her CS Tea Talk: Computer science goes to sea: Disentangling genomes from DNA sequence data using bioinformatics.

In this talk I will discuss how we use computational approaches to study microorganisms living in the deep sea (and elsewhere!). I'll provide an overview of how biologists work with 'big data' in the form of massive DNA sequencing datasets, and how we use bioinformatics to answer questions like 'who's there?' and 'what are they doing?' I'll share examples from my own work, in which we use these approaches to gain insights into how microbes evolve and interact with each other and with viruses in deep-sea hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean.

Join us for tea and treats.
