CS Tea Talk by Ben Wedin

Thu, October 4, 2018 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm (1h)

Title: 'Creating a lookup table for biology: visualizing and processing gene expression data.'

Abstract: How do algorithms and data visualization help researchers better understand and treat human disease? The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is a non-profit biomedical research institute that seeks to transform medicine through large-scale collaborative projects. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of The Broad Institute’s mission as well as the different groups inside Broad. In the remainder of my talk, I will describe some of my work in the Cancer Program’s Connectivity Map group. I will go through some examples of the algorithms used to help create one of the largest public databases of gene expression data, and then how these data are fed into interactive data visualizations to help researchers generate novel medical hypotheses.
