CS Tea Talk: CS for Sports Analytics
Fivethirtyeight.com provides real-time predictions for March Madness, the NFL and MLB. Their predictions are powered by advanced statistics gathered by teams of professionals with state of the art technology. What if you wanted to do the same thing for a sport where the best source of data is... Twitter? In this talk, we'll see how ideas from Natural Language Processing, Algorithms and Linear Algebra enable us to predict the winners of Ultimate Frisbee games, and how we can architect a system to provide these predictions quickly. We'll also take a look at how to approach your own side projects when starting from scratch. We will begin with cookies and tea in CMC 328. We'll then move next door to CMC 301 for Sam's talk.
