Title: Computing with orientations

Abstract: In many spatial applications, we are interested in not just the location of an object, but also its orientation. For example, a self-driving car needs to know not just where the road is but also its direction and slope. And an MRI instrument, that is reconstructing neuronal pathways based on measurements of how water diffuses through brain tissue, needs to analyze the directions of greatest and least diffusivity at each point of the brain. So we end up with data sets of orientations. How do we visualize such a data set? And how do we compute its average and other statistics? This talk will survey some of the computational techniques that arise in such problems.
