Green Card Voices Reception

Tue, May 2, 2017 • 5:30pm - 6:30pm (1h) • Weitz Center LOME

Join us for a reception to celebrate the Green Card Voices educational panels tour of Northfield on Tuesday, May 2 at the Weitz Center for Creativity in the lobby over the main entrance (LOME). There will be brief remarks by Ruben Alvarez, a teacher at the Northfield Middle School and Reginaldo Haslett- Marroquin, from Main Street Project and a local author and food activist. Catering by Maria's Taco Hut (the BEST food truck in our area!)

Launched in 2013, Green Card Voice’s mission is to share various stories of our nation’s 40 million immigrants and put a human face to the current immigration debate. Simply, we hope to introduce immigrants to their neighbors. Our organization focuses not only on capturing individual stories, but also on demonstrating the incredible breadth of the immigrant population. We want to show that immigrants work on our farms, serve our food, teach our children, create our technologies, and start our Fortune 500 companies.

Utilizing web-based video storytelling, we’re traveling the country and listening to those with the courage to share their journey, documenting each story in an authentic and unbiased way. The chronicles of those whose stories we capture are both awe-inspiring and thought-provoking, portraying the diversity of the immigrant experience in the United States. Immigrants have played a vital role at each turn in our nation’s history, and they continue to do so today. By sharing these stories, we can instill a sense of pride in our nation’s immigrant population and thank them for all of their contributions.

Co-sponsored by Carleton College and St. Olaf Educational Studies departments with generous financial support from the Mellon Foundation Bridge Grant. Panels will be displayed at the Northfield Public Library, the Carleton & St. Olaf campuses, and Northfield Middle School’s Cinco de Mayo Celebration on May 4th. We are excited to bring this exhibit to Northfield in support of our town’s and state’s immigrants. To hear more immigrant stories, please visit the Green Card Voices website. St. Olaf will be hosting a free conference in conjunction with this exhibit on Saturday, May 6th. For more information, please visit the MinneSLIFE website.
