AP and IB Credits

Advanced Placement (AP)

HISTORY - Score of 4 or 5: 6 credits granted for each exam.

The History department grants 6 credits toward the History major for scores of 4 or 5 on two Advanced Placement examinations. The United States exam may be counted in the U.S. major field, and the Europe exam may be counted in the Early Modern/Modern Europe major field. Although A.P. World History does not count toward the History major fields, it may be used to fulfill the 210 distribution credits needed for graduation. The History department will count no more than 12 pre-matriculation credits total toward the major from approved exams (AP and/or IB), and majors are strongly encouraged to count no more than 6 such credits toward the major.

If you have not yet had your AP History scores submitted to the Carleton Registrar's Office, you can contact the College Board at collegeboard.org or call them at 877-274-6474 and ask them to submit your scores to the Carleton Registrar's Office for you. These official scores must be submitted by the College Board Advanced Placement office to the Carleton Registrar's office in order for them to count toward your major. Please contact Maria Reverman in the Carleton Registrar's Office if you need further assistance. Please understand that Maria cannot obtain your scores for you. You will need to contact the College Board yourself if you want your AP scores submitted to Carleton.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

HISTORY--Score of 5, 6, or 7: 6 credits granted for each exam.

The History department grants credit toward the major and toward the "Europe after 1450" field within the major for scores of 5, 6, or 7 on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level examination in European history. I.B. History of East and South East Asia and Oceania, History of South Asia and the Middle East, or History of Africa shall be considered on a case-by-case basis, and may be ascribed toward a History major field, total major credits, and/or toward the 210 distribution credits needed for graduation by the History Department Chair. The History department will count no more than 12 pre-matriculation credits total toward the major from approved exams (AP and/or IB), and majors are strongly encouraged to count no more than 6 such credits toward the major.
