Carleton Linguistics Colloquium with Dr. Ashley Kentner

Mon, October 19, 2020 • 3:00pm - 4:00pm (1h) • Zoom Meeting
Sometimes what scientists choose not to do—and the reasons for those decisions—are as important for contextualizing the results of a study as the work actually conducted. This talk will use a recent project on the syntax and semantics of comparison constructions in American Sign Language (ASL) as a case study in when and how linguists document such roads not taken. In particular, we will examine the decision to hold off on employing a well-established test involving scope that has been central to studies of comparatives cross-linguistically. The goal is to contribute to a larger conversation concerning not only how we conduct science, but also how we communicate endeavors and findings.

Dr. Ashley Kentner earned her Ph.D. in Linguistics from Purdue University in 2020. Her dissertation is titled 'Examining the Syntax and Semantics of ASL MORE- and BEAT-constructions'.
