What does it mean when people write in non-standard ways on social media? This talk will examine how writing in all caps (as well as several other orthographic patterns) can be used to convey tone of voice and other prosodic information, an adaptation that allows us to be more expressive now that so much interpersonal communication is done through writing. From looooong words to mOcKiNg SpOnGeBoB, innovative orthography helps the little voice in our heads do the prosodic work of better understanding text.
