Case in Contact: The Estonian Adessive and the German Dative

Mon, November 12, 2018 • 4:00pm - 5:00pm (1h) • Leighton 304

Please join us Monday, 12 November, 4:00-5:00 pm, Leighton 304 for Chase Garcia's Comps Defense: Case in Contact: The Estonian Adessive and the German Dative.

The presentation will be 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes of questions. Come for the food, stay for the in-depth insights on language contact as manifested (maybe?) by Estonian! I’m aiming to make this presentation accessible to linguists and non-linguists alike.

So, what is case? Here’s an example from Japanese: tabemono-wo tabemasu —> (I) food-object marker eat —> I eat food. In this sentence, the wo marks the object; it’s a case - to be technical, it’s accusative case. I look at this in Estonian and how the function of one case, the adessive case traditionally thought to mark location, seems to have semantically changed to also mark an experiencer of some event in a sentence, similar to the dative case in German.

Please come - even if it’s only for part of it - if you can!
