Title:  Data Science in 3M Finance

Full Abstract:
The 3M Company, is a global, science-based company known for its commitment to innovation. 3M products are so widely used that it is said a person is rarely more than 10 feet away from 3M Science! One newer area for innovation within 3M is data science. At 3M, data science is used within the research labs to develop new products and technologies, but it is also used within the business (e.g. marketing, supply chain, finance) to develop new ways of answering about business questions (e.g. pricing, demand forecasting, risk management) using data. In 2016, 3M Finance started a new team to develop data science solutions for finance questions. These solutions combine mathematics, software development, and domain expertise. In this talk, Dr. Micek will discuss her career path from applied mathematics in an academic setting into data science in industry, as well as the types of problems she’s worked on in her previous roles. She’ll also give an overview of how to solve a common problem in finance (predicting monthly sales) by combining mathematical concepts (time series analysis) and software development tools (R Studio).
