Jamal J. Elias, Walter H. Annenberg Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Religious Studies and South Asia Studies, University of Pennsylvania, will discuss topics emerging from his recent book: Alef Is for Allah: Childhood, Emotion, and Visual Culture in Islamic SocietiesUsing a wide range of visual and written sources, Professor Elias investigates childhood in the modern Islamic world and explores the way concepts of innocence and cuteness influence social understandings of ethics, morality, and community.
