Chinese Ensemble Concert: Gao Hong, director
The Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble performs on traditional bowed strings, plucked strings, winds and percussion instruments. Their repertoire includes Chinese classical, folk, percussion, minority, and contemporary music.
Recently, the prestigious China National Traditional Orchestra put a piece performed by the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble on their Kuaishou official website. Within a few days, it had more than 85,000 views and over 3,200 likes. Gao Hong’s pipa student, Gus Holley, also has a recording of a performance of a pipa solo on the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble website that has been viewed by over 85,000 people. The Carleton College Chinese Music Ensemble received invitations to perform in several virtual concerts for Minnesota communities during the Spring Festival. They were also invited by the Chinese Consulate General in Chicago to give the opening performance for their Lantern Festival celebration for Chinese and American students. This Saturday, March 6, at 8 pm CST, the Ensemble will present their winter concert. They will perform a program of famous Chinese pieces plus the world premiere a composition by An Dongni, a graduate student in the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music.
The repertoire for the concert will include:
A World Premiere of Fantasia on the Hong River. Also featured will be Love Sickness by Chen Yunyun, a young Chinese composer popular among Chinese youth. In addition, there will be Chinese classics such as Red Flowers Blooming Brightly On the Mountain, Lanterns and Drums in Spring, Horse Racing, Journey To Suzhou, Capriccio in the Western Regions, Fishermen Singing at Sunset and others.
