Toccata: French and American symphonic works for organ

Sun, September 29, 2019 • 2:00pm - 3:00pm (1h) • Skinner Memorial Chapel

Matthew OMatthew O’Sullivan will celebrate the renovation of the Skinner Chapel organ by presenting a program that mixes classics of the French symphonic organ repertoire by Widor, Saint-Saëns and Vierne with striking, lesser-known works in a lighter style by American composers.  The program will include several works featured in the original dedication concert for the organ in 1916.

Matthew O’Sullivan currently serves as head organist of Hope Lutheran church in Bozeman, MT.  He has recently made guest appearances with the Bozeman Symphony, Helena Symphony, Montana State University Chorale and Aoide Chamber Singers, as well as presenting frequent solo recitals.  In February 2019, he was featured on an episode of Montana PBS’s 11th & Grant with Eric Funk, the first ever organist to appear on this show.

Before moving to Bozeman in 2015, Matthew was based in the UK.  He began learning the organ while a chorister at Magdalen College, Oxford, and before leaving high school had gained his Associateship diploma from the Royal College of Organists, winning four prizes in the examination. While gaining his degree in Music at Cambridge University, he accompanied and directed the choir of Christ’s College in services, a live BBC broadcast, two commercial CD recordings and several foreign tours.  From 2002-2012 he was Director of Music at the church of St John the Divine in Richmond, near London. Matthew is also active as a composer for choir and organ, and received the Air France Prize in the first international composition competition for cathedral choirs in Amiens, France.
