Reading, Redaction, and Liturgy in Ancient Jewish Literature

Tuesday, November 5th, 2019
5:00 pm / Gould Library Atheneum

The literature of the ancient rabbis is often considered primarily oral, and the fact that it survives in writing to be the results of a later period. This talk situates the composition of ancient rabbinic literature in an environment where writing was revered, and argues that the creation (writing, redaction, and performance) of rabbinic texts is better understood as a type of liturgy.
