Directed reading during winter break 2004.

ENGLISH 380-07: LONDON THEATER (6 CREDITS)

Students should choose one of the following two courses:

ENGLISH 381-07: Literature and Landscape in Georgian England (6 CREDITS)

Pope’s Twickenham, Dr. Johnson’s London, Wordsworth’s Grasmere, Austen’s Chawton and Bath, and Keats’s Hampstead are some of the venues we’ll visit and explore in a study of how the places these writers knew figured in their essays, poetry and novels.
Instructor: Professor Walker

OR

PSYCHOLOGY 381-07: London Program: Psychology in Cross-National Perspective (6 CREDITS, SS)

This seminar will consider how robust theories and findings in psychology are when applied to people in different nations and cultures. We will also examine how psychology as a discipline is represented elsewhere, most notably in the United Kingdom. Psychologists with interests in cross-cultural research will visit the seminar.
Instructor: Professor Lutsky

Housing

Students will stay in double or triple rooms at the Avalon Hotel, 46 Cartwright Gardens, London WC1, conveniently located in central London.

Students will have breakfast at the hotel and eat lunch and dinner on their own with an allowance provided by the program. Classes meet at a nearby site, a short walk from the Avalon.

Class Schedule

Classes will meet Monday through Thursday mornings. Seminar participants also typically attend two theater productions as a group during weekday evenings. This schedule allows students to explore London and travel around Britain over long weekends. Students may, of course, travel on their own before and after the seminar and during the program’s midterm break.

Excursions

Group excursions are likely to include trips to the Royal Shakespeare Theater in Stratford-on-Avon, the Freud Museum in London, the Lake District, Chawton, Bath, and sites of literary interest in London. In addition, we will attend numerous theater productions in London at major theaters such as the RSC, the National Theater, and the Almeida, and at smaller venues such as the Bridge Lane Theater and Maison Bertaux.

Expenses

Students pay the 2004-05 Carleton comprehensive fee, which covers the costs of instruction, room, board, and all scheduled excursions, performances, cultural, and social events. Students are responsible for their own travel expenses to and from the program site, books, personal expenses, and independent travel costs. Student financial aid is applicable as on campus. See the Off-Campus Studies Planning & Program Guide for further information regarding work study contracts, loans and other subjects on financial aid.
