Overview
In the fall and winter terms of the 2010-2011 academic year, the PEAR Curriculum Committee (Andy Clark, Amy Erickson, Keren Gudeman, Linda Luedke, Donna Ricks and Gerald Young) finalized the creation of student surveys and rubrics for both PE classes and varsity teams. We discussed the construction of the surveys and the rubrics with the rest of the department throughout this time, receiving feedback on the questions being asked and the dimensions being assessed. Since this was the first run of the surveys and the rubrics, we adjusted a few steps from our initial plan. Since the surveys were simple and straight forward, we had the surveys sent out during the eighth week of spring term to all students enrolled in activity classes (this was not a change in design).
The implementation of the rubrics was modified. For PE activity classes, we asked that only full-time faculty and staff who were teaching complete the rubric for each of their classes. Instead of performing a rubric for all students enrolled in their classes, which we felt would have been an undesirable task, we generated a random sample of 30% for each class for the instructors to assess. We felt this value gave us an adequate sample size. For the varsity spring sports, we kept with the plan and asked the head coaches to complete the varsity rubric for each of their first-year students after the conclusion of their season.
