She is particularly interested in how to communicate and teach science effectively, and will touch on some of the research behind teaching science as a science. She'll explain how this multifaceted career path all makes sense -- at least to her -- and how she has managed to spin her physics training into a rich and rewarding career where not only is she her own boss, but she is always learning something new.

  • PHYS 123 Speaker Rik Gran
    • The neutrino is the second most common particle in the Universe (after photons), by far more numerous that electrons, protons, and neutrons, yet its the least understood and most curious of the particles we know about. The MINOS experiment at the Soudan Underground Lab, and the NOvA experiment, under construction at Ash River, MN, are the current and the next generation of long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. In this talk, Rik will demonstrate what neutrino flavor oscillation is, why neutrino "flavor" oscillation is even more curious than the flavor oscillation observed for other particles (!), that the apparent neutrino mass itself is curious on the femtoscopic scale of particle physics, and might also speak to the apparent matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe on the cosmological scale. He will develop these topics in a context that highlights how a neutrino oscillation experiment works and what particle physics experimentalists do to accomplish such experiments.

  • PHYS 123 Speaker Deborah Salon
    • The focus of climate policy - especially as portrayed in the media - has been on the big international treaty negotiations, the most recent of which took place in Copenhagen last December. But much of the real action to reduce the human carbon "footprint" happens at the individual level when people make decisions about their energy use such as how much living space they need, where to live, and both how and how much to travel. In this talk, Deborah will highlight what is known (and NOT known!) about the climate impacts of our individual decisions, and discuss how policymakers at many levels of government are struggling to craft policy to encourage us all to reduce our personal carbon footprints. Along the way, she'll also talk about her personal journey from studying physics at Carleton (and doing her comps project on the physics of the car!) to becoming an urban and environmental economist.

  • Women in Science Talk by Andrea Lommen '91
    • Women in Science: Do it your way. There is not a lot of overt discrimination left in science, which is wonderful, and I offer my gratitude to those who came before me, for whom that was not true. What's left, however, is sneakier and more covert, and sometimes leaves me thinking "it's just me." But it's not. There's some macho culture left that I encounter, but when I calmly say "I'm not going to do it that way, but rather this other way that suits me better" I find that people respect my decision. So I hope to share with you some of those things I've had to say, and lines I've had to draw in order to carve out the life I wanted.

Friday, April 22nd

  • PHYS 123 Speaker Robert Hallock
    • Robert Hallock is a Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. His research is in the general area of experimental Condensed Matter Physics, with an emphasis on low temperature phenomena, particularly liquid helium, liquid helium films, and solid helium. About 40 years ago it was predicted that it might be possible for solid helium, 4He, to display some of the properties of a superfluid, thus there might be a supersolid. Experiments in the mid to late 1970’s were negative and the prediction languished. Then in 2004 an experiment was done that was interpreted as positive evidence for the presence of a supersolid in solid helium. But, the interpretation has been controversial and other evidence complicates the picture. Our experiments are conceptually different from all the others and may provide substantial evidence for superfluid behavior in solid 4He. Recent theoretical predictions, which differ substantially from the original theory of 40 years ago, are regarded as very consistent with the observations. In this talk Bob will begin with a brief discussion of some of the remarkable properties of superfluid 4He and then discuss experiments on solid 4He. The subject is a good example of how understanding of a physical system evolves, which is often nothing like the tidy stories one reads about in books
