Mission to the Outer Solar System

Spacecraft exploration of our solar system has allowed for unprecedented imagery and understanding of distant objects; it also entails great difficulty. Referencing the New Horizons mission to the Pluto-Charon system as a case study, I introduce a number of critical considerations for spacecraft exploration and demonstrate the remarkable challenge presented by outer solar system missions. Innovations such as radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs), gravity assist maneuvers, and NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) have allowed for the success of these missions. I examine the physical principles behind such systems.
