The Little Ice Age

The Little Ice Age, a period of minor cooling in the Northern Hemisphere between 1300 and 1800 A.D., represents a significant era in recent history. Analysis of the physics behind the Little Ice Age can inform the analysis of modern climate change, a global issue with significant societal impacts. In this talk, I will discuss the evidence we have of the Little Ice Age, the physical mechanisms that control Earth’s climate, and the theories regarding the cause of the Little Ice Age. In the process, I will explain some of the physics that allows us to reconstruct and study past climates and solar activity. I conclude that many factors contributed to the onset and persistence of the Little Ice Age and that these factors are insufficient to explain modern climate change without anthropogenic effects.
