John Ibele leads mechanical process development for the Recording Head Operations division of Seagate Technology. Incorporating head - media spacing targets in the 10’s of nanometers, critical line widths that push beyond the capabilities of most semiconductor manufacturers, and process sigmas that are often quoted in 10ths of Angstroms, today’s disk drive is one of the few quantum effect devices to be found in the average home. Its design, development and production represent a fascinating playground for the practical physicist. John will describe current challenges within the disk drive industry and the skills and tools required to solve them, while at the same time relating his personal career journey.
