UN International Day of Peace Celebration

Tue, September 20, 2016 • 6:30pm - 9:00pm (2h 30m) • Great Hall

The 14th Northfield community annual observance of the United Nations International Day of Peace on Tuesday September 20th will begin celebrations of the United Nations International Day of Peace, which is celebrated annually around the world on September 21st or in the week surrounding it.

Supporting this year's theme, 'Sustainable Peace: Building Blocks for Peace,' the program will introduce the 17 Building Blocks for Peace developed by 193 member countries of the UN in September 2015. These issues are challenges for the world to meet by the year 2030, continuing the Millennium Development Goals 2000-2015.

These goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General, reminds us that development and peace are interdependent and mutually reinforcing. They are essential to achieving peace in our time at any time.

The event will begin with a 6:30 pm reception and a formal commemoration of the United Nations International Day of Peace during which the Northfield students participating in the Arts for Peace Program will receive the Peace Award. At 7:00 pm a variety of musical performances, poetry reading and open mic will follow to celebrate the theme of Sustainable Peace.

The celebration, which is open to the public and free of charge, is hosted by the Harold Stassen United Nations Fund of Carleton College via the Political Science Department, and supported by peace and justice groups in Northfield, the Northfield Human Rights Commission, the Healthy Community Initiative, the Northfield Arts Guild, The Key, Northfield students for social justice and the City Council.
