Sociology and anthropology are immense fields, and there’s only so much our department can offer in regular courses. Majors are encouraged to take advantage of Independent Study courses, which let students pursue areas not included in normal course offerings. See the Independent Study Policy for more information.

Majors are also encouraged to undertake independent research projects during the school year and during breaks. Occasionally opportunities arise for students to serve as research assistants to faculty as well.

Projects often take on a life cycle of their own and are not easily squeezed into a ten-week term. Don’t let this stop you. If you come across a topic that interests you, ask a professor how you could manage a project on it. If one professor doesn’t have time to supervise your project, ask another.
