  • Convocation: Steve Poskanzer (ALL FACULTY)
    • The eleventh president of Carleton College, Steven G. Poskanzer assumed his new role on August 2. Originally from Central New York, Poskanzer attended Princeton University as an undergraduate, where he studied International Relations with a concentration in African Studies. He subsequently received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, after which he launched his career into higher education. Formerly chief of staff to the president at the University of Chicago for four years, Poskanzer served for the past 12 years in the SUNY system, the New York state system of higher education that encompasses 64 campuses. He held associate and senior associate provost positions in the main SUNY office, the final two years as head of the office of academic affairs. He became vice provost for academic affairs in 2000 before moving to the SUNY–New Paltz campus in October 2001 as that institution’s president, serving first on an interim basis until being named permanently to the position in 2003. Having served leadership roles at both public and private institutions of higher education gives Poskanzer a unique perspective as the new president of Carleton College.

    • Beatriz Cortez is a specialist of Contemporary Central American Literature and Cultural Studies. Originally from El Salvador, she currently resides in California where she is the co-founder and director of the Central American Studies Program at the California State University at Northridge. She is the author of many articles about Central America and published in 2010 the book Estética del cinismo.

  • Designing Mexico's Socialist Education Program: Leftist Intellecturals as Idealist Reformers and Radical Pedagogoues, 1931-1940
    • Luis Ruiz, born in Cananea, Mexico, is a PhD Candidate in History, within the field of Latin America, and teaches at the University of Oregon. His research interests include the history of intellectuals, the Mexican Revolution, state formation in the 1920s and 1930s, public education, and the production of history textbooks. He is currently working on a dissertation that will explore the role that leftist intellectuals played in shaping the Ministry of Public Education throughout the 1930s.

    • Oscar Aibar is a Spanish writer and a film director from Barcelona and currently he lives in Madrid.   • Documentary as Symptom and Therapy: Montage, Moral Tropes and the Framing of Spanish Historical Memory
    • Dr. Faber was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where he studied Spanish. He is Professor and Chair of the Dept. of Hispanic Studies at Oberlin College, and he received his doctorate from the University of California, Davis. He is also the author of "Exile and Cultural Hegemony: Spanish Exiles in Mexico" (Vanderbilt, 2002), and "Anglo-American Hispanists and the Spanish Civil War"(Palgrave, 2008), as well as some fort articles on Spanish and Latin American literature, history and politics. In 2000 he won the George Watt Essay Prize in the graduate category, and has been on the ALBA board since 2004. He currently serves on the Executive Committee and chairs the Watt Prize jury.

    • Witness For Peace - Upper Midwest's fall speaker tour is coming to Carleton! Nancy Garcia of COMI (Center for the Orientation of Migrants) will speak about migration trends through Mexico and illuminate the violence and dangers that Central American migrants face on their way north. COMI is a national migrant support network in Oaxaca, MX and provides workshops and orientation for migrants and a point of contact and referral for family members of migrants trying to locate their displaced loved ones.
