Reading Data Warehouse Data Into SPSS

Reading data from the data warehouse into SPSS is relatively easy, but (at least for SPSS 15.0) appears not to work well using SPSS's database wizard.

No matter, though.

Just start up SPSS as ads\YOURNETID (if you've logged in via Active Directory, you don't need to worry about this; otherwise, see this page).  Then bring up a new "syntax" window in SPSS (File -> New -> Syntax), paste in the following SPSS code, edit the code to taste, then click Run -> All in the syntax window.  Here is the code:

GET DATA
/TYPE=ODBC
/CONNECT='Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=dwsql.ads.carleton.edu\PRODUCTION;Database=MasterDimensions;Trusted_Connection=yes;'
/SQL='Select top 10 * FROM dbo.MT_ProspectActivityMining'.
DATASET NAME DataSet1 WINDOW=FRONT.
DATASET ACTIVATE DataSet1.
EXECUTE.

Parts of this code that you will want to modify include 1) the SQL statement (the stuff in single quotes after /SQL=) and 2) the dataset name (DataSet1 above).

Naturally, you will need to know the data warehouse well enough to understand what SQL you will need to issue, in order to obtain the data you need.  Help is available for this sort of thing from the data warehouse team.
