Honorary Degrees

Honorary degrees have been a tradition in American higher education for more than 300 years. They are conferred honoris causa: “for the sake of honor.” Honorary doctorate degrees are a distinction of high order, and Carleton College awards them sparingly and with great care. The faculty and the Board of Trustees choose recipients who have achieved eminence in their own profession or who have rendered distinguished service to society.
