Convocation: Robert Sapolsky

Fri, April 27, 2018 • 10:50am - 11:50am (1h) • Skinner Chapel

Robert Sapolsky, one of the leading neuroscientists in the world, studies the causes and effects of stress in both animals and humans. Few of us are destined to die from smallpox, malnutrition or the plague. Instead, we succumb to diseases of Western lifestyle, diseases where we live long enough and well enough to slowly accumulate damage. Crucially, stress can dramatically worsen that process.

Sapolsky explains how the human body's response to stress is wonderfully adaptive if one is being stressed like a normal animal, and disastrous, if one is being stressed like a psychosocially complex human. He also offers broad outlines of stress management in his presentation titled “Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers: Stress and Disease.”
