General Information about the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF) and Mellon Graduate School Exploration Fellowship (MGSEF):

Purpose: The primary goal of these two Mellon fellowship programs is to increase the number of students from historically and currently underrepresented groups, and others with a demonstrated commitment to eradicating racial disparities, who pursue PhDs in core fields in the arts and sciences and go on to become the teacher/scholars of the future.

Both programs provide financial and other support for undergraduate research, nurture students as scholars, and offer mentoring and guidance to help students navigate the path to graduate school (including the application process). These programs aim to enhance the diversity of faculty in America’s universities and colleges as well as to address the educational consequences of these historic disparities. Although the MMUF and MGSEF are similar programs, a few important differences exist and they are described in the Bulletin of Information. Carleton uses a combined application for the fellowships and will consider all applicants for both programs, though you may express a preference as part of the application process.

Eligibility: Candidates for the MMUF may be in their sophomore or junior year; candidates for the MGSEF must be sophomores. Students from any major at Carleton may apply, but students majoring in or intending to major in designated fields or intending to pursue graduate study in them are particularly encouraged to apply and are given preference in the selection process. For the MMUF and MGSEF, students with U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Resident (Green Card) Status, or DACA status are eligible to apply.

Selection Criteria: MMUF and MGSEF Fellows will be chosen on the basis of evidence of academic ability and potential, the quality of their research project ideas, and their understanding of and commitment to the goals of these fellowship programs.
