Since its first greenhouse gas inventory in 2008, Carleton College in Northfield, MN has reduced its carbon footprint by 68%. In 2021, the College completed its Utility Master Plan, a plan that focuses on upgrading campus facilities to reduce operating costs and emissions, with the goal of making the college carbon neutral by 2050.

The Northfield, Minnesota college shut down its last boiler in May—a milestone in its commitment to a carbon-free campus by 2050

On May 21, 2021 Carleton turned off steam power for the last time ever. This concludes 111 years of using steam to fuel our campus and help students survive Minnesota winters. The college has now fully transitioned to hot water geothermal power, a shift that indicates Phase 2 of the Utility Master Plan has been completed.

New Boilers in Facilities
2 November 2020During the summer of 2020, the exisiting facilities building off of Highway 19 got a facelift and some upgraded equipment. Three new hot water boilers were placed on their pads on July 8th, 2020. There will be two more coming in 2021, but this is a big milestone. These boilers will supplement the geothermal system, which will cover about 70% of the College’s annual heating and cooling demands. These boilers are also much more efficient than the old boilers they are replacing.

Burton Road Construction Update
13 May 2020Since majority of faculty, staff, and students are off-campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, facilities is getting a jump-start on summer construction. See the attachment for photos. Because we needed to replace the old steam piping with new hot water piping, we are taking advantage of the opportunity to upgrade the Burton service road and loading docks.
