Carleton’s excellence is rooted in its students and faculty. Mutual intellectual respect, the cornerstone of the faculty-student relationship at Carleton, is among the factors that yield impressive results for our graduates.

  • Carleton was one of three institutions yielding the highest number of Thomas J. Watson Foundation Fellowships. Matthew Fink ’11, one of three Carls named among the 40 Watson recipients, will travel to Sweden, Germany, and South Korea to study professional gaming and the role of technology in opening new competitive arenas for people with disabilities.
  • In September, seven faculty members—a chemist, two political scientists, a historian, a musician, and professors of English and German—begin multi-year residencies in the Weitz Center for Creativity. “Physical space matters. Proximity matters,” says Dean of the College Beverly Nagel. The Weitz Center provides both space and proximity to encourage creativity in all academic disciplines. Among the center’s many collaborations, the art and astronomy departments will partner through the Perlman Teaching Museum’s first exhibition, Seeing is Knowing: The Universe.
  • Carleton faculty members won 19 grants totaling nearly $1.5 million in support of their scholarship and teaching this year, the highest success rate in over five years. Also notable was the distribution across all academic disciplines, with generous grants for the humanities and arts and literature in addition to the sciences. As a recipient of a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, Harry Williams, Laird Bell Professor of History, will spend a year teaching at Northeast Normal University in Changchun and researching China’s relations with black America.
  • Carleton’s continued focus on excellence in writing received national recognition in 2010. The Carleton College Writing Program, directed by senior lecturer in English Carol Rutz, earned the Award for Improving General Education from the Association for General and Liberal Studies. In a recent survey, more than 90 percent of respondents who graduated in the last three decades say Carleton prepared them to write effectively. Today, students submit an interdisciplinary writing portfolio for individual assessment midway through their schooling. The program promotes individual improvement and provides benchmarks for improvement.
