Argument and Inquiry Seminars

Argument and Inquiry (A&I) Seminars are courses designed to introduce students to a liberal arts approach to learning and to develop the critical and creative skills they will need to thrive in academic work at Carleton.

The course number 100 is reserved exclusively for A&I seminars, which are offered on a letter-grade basis. Faculty may not choose to override the designated capacity of an A&I seminar.

Every first-year, first-term student is required to enroll in one A&I seminar; no other students may enroll in an A&I. A&I courses may not be dropped (unless simultaneously replaced with another A&I seminar) and may not be taken on an elective S/Cr/NC basis. Students who do not successfully complete their A&I seminar with a grade of C- or better may satisfy the corresponding graduation requirement by completing six additional credits of coursework designated WR2.
