Submission or Emancipation? Marianne Weber on Religion and Modernity

Bryn-Jones Chair Lecture by Lori Pearson, Professor of Religion

4:30 – 5:30 pm / Zoom
Marianne Weber

Does religion hamper or promote women's rights? Is the modern world a space of emancipation for women? In this talk, Lori Pearson explores how Marianne Weber (wife of Max Weber) grappled with these questions around 1900, in the company of scholars whose works would become the cornerstones of numerous disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. A consideration of Marianne Weber's work gives us new eyes to read dominant theories about progress, freedom, secularity, and religion in the modern world, and offers insight into questions about gender, tradition, and modernity that still circulate in scholarly and public conversations today.
