Most Humanities Center events are open to the public, and we feature a series of panels throughout the year that explicitly seeks to engage the community beyond Carleton in topics of great public interest. Such events in the past have explored the ethics of health care in 2018, featured commentary on political campaigns in 2012, Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and on the 2008 U.S. election.

In recent years our public humanities events have featured partnerships with the Minnesota Humanities Center’s “Veterans’ Voices” and “Toward a More Perfect Union” initiatives. “Northfield Reads” events associated with those initiatives have deepened our connections to the Northfield Public Library, Healthy Community Initiative, and Human Rights Commission, as well as area schools.
