Carleton College Symphony Band presents its Spring Concert

Carleton College’s Symphony Band, directed by Ronald Rodman, will present its spring concert on Friday, May 17 at 8 p.m. in the Concert Hall. This special performance wraps up the academic year with a concert celebrating the graduating members of the Class of 2013. This event is free and open to the public.

The program will feature clarinet soloist Christophe Dethier ’13 (Bellevue, Wash.) performing

Weber’s “Concertino.” Other pieces on the program include Mendelssohn’s “Fingal’s Cave Overture,” Tichelli’s “Blue Shades,” “Four Scottish Dances” by Malcolm Arnold, and music from the film, The Hobbit: an Unexpected Journey by Howard Shore.

Ronald Rodman, Dye Family Professor of Music and Director of the Carleton Symphony Band, earned his Ph.D. in Music Theory from Indiana University. He studies the use of music in electronic media, post-tonal theory in the 20th century, and wind band music history.

Rodman has published numerous articles in professional music journals. He is the author of the book, “Tuning In: American Narrative Television Music” (Oxford University Press, 2010) and also curates the Music In Film Series at Carleton.
